Red Sox avoid disaster, beat Yankees in 10 innings for 4-game sweep

The Boston Red Sox nearly collapsed, allowing the New York Yankees to take Sunday night’s game. But in the bottom of the tenth, Boston’s bats came to life against Fernando Cruz. The Red Sox won 5-4 in ten innings, scoring three runs in the bottom of the tenth to play Dirty Water and secure a four-game sweep.

The Red Sox got an electric start from Sonny Gray, as he went 7.1 innings of no-hit ball on Sunday night. Amed Rosario broke up the no-hitter in the eighth, which started the Yankees’ comeback. They scored two runs in the ninth to tie the game, with Anthony Volpe scoring the game-tying run. David Bednar shut the Sox down in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extras.

A wild tenth inning on both sides ended with Jarren Duran’s walk-off single, securing a 5-4 win for the Red Sox. Cruz recorded only one out in the tenth inning, allowing two singles and a sacrifice fly to lose the game. He needed to come into the game because Bednar had already pitched two innings, helping get the Yankees to the precipice of victory.

The Yankees scored two runs in the ninth and two runs in the tenth, almost all because of Wilyer Abreu. The Red Sox right fielder turned a flyout into a run-scoring play in the ninth. A throwing error sent Jose Caballero home and Anthony Volpe to third, where he scored on a Paul Goldschmidt grounder. Then, Abreu dropped a flyball in the tenth that allowed Max Schueman to score.

Duran’s walk-off will be the memory from this game, however, as he walked off the Yankees on Sunday night. He washed out Abreu’s errors and his own moment with a fan from earlier in the weekend in one swing.
