Rangers Wyatt Langford gets important injury update before Tigers clash

The Texas Rangers arrived in Detroit for their weekend series against the Tigers, carrying some unwelcome news: star outfielder Wyatt Langford will be sidelined for at least another week after suffering a setback during his injury rehabilitation. Langford will be shut down from throwing and swinging a bat for seven days before the Rangers reevaluate his status from there.

The setback came at the worst possible moment. Langford had been on track to rejoin the active roster Saturday and was playing in his first extended spring training game in Arizona on Thursday, his first real game action since being placed on the 10-day IL on April 22 with a Grade 1 flexor strain in his right forearm.

He exited after just two swings, telling reporters afterward that his forearm felt exactly like it did when the injury first occurred. Rangers manager Skip Schumaker confirmed the shutdown, though noted Langford will continue running to maintain his conditioning while his forearm heals.

The 24-year-old was already dealing with a slow start before the injury hit. After being named the team’s MVP in 2025, posting a 5.6 bWAR with 22 home runs and 22 stolen bases, Langford entered the IL slashing just .238/.274/.363 with one home run and four RBIs in 20 games. That said, he had been heating up, riding an 11-game on-base streak before the forearm tightness forced him out of a game against Pittsburgh. The Rangers need that version of Langford, not the cold one, badly.

The Rangers enter Detroit sitting within striking distance of first place in the AL West, making this setback even more frustrating. Right now, the focus is on getting healthy. As manager, Schumaker put it best before the season: “If he’s posting, the numbers will be there.” The Rangers just need to get him back on the field first.
