Rangers star Jacob deGrom’s ‘fear’ that has led to incredible success in MLB career
Texas Rangers star Jacob deGrom is still one of the best starting pitchers in MLB at 37 years old. He has enjoyed a strong career despite being limited by injuries at times. deGrom could end up reaching the Hall of Fame someday. During a recent interview, deGrom revealed the secret behind his success at the big league level, via MLB Network Radio.
“The fear of failure, I can’t stand failing,” deGrom said. “That drives me to constantly try to figure out a way to be better.”
deGrom is a five-time All-Star. During his prime, he was the best pitcher in the game. The right-handed hurler earned back-to-back Cy Young awards in 2018 and 2019 with the New York Mets. There were times when deGrom simply looked unhittable on the mound.
Although he isn’t that same pitcher now, deGrom is still capable of performing at a high level. He currently holds a 3.48 ERA across 12 starts in 2026. The Rangers star also has 78 strikeouts in his 64.2 innings of work on the mound.
deGrom does not want to fail. His “fear of failure” is a secret behind his success on the mound. It has worked, as he’s been a tremendous pitcher throughout his big league career.
On Friday night, the Rangers will begin a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians at home. Texas is 30-32 and in third place in the American League West standings, while the Guardians lead the AL Central with a 36-28 record. First pitch for the ball game on Friday is scheduled for 8:15 PM EST.
