Rangers make unfortunate Jack Leiter injury move

The Texas Rangers have struggled to find their footing in 2026, entering Sunday at third place in the AL West with their 36-40 record. Now, the franchise has been forced to alter their pitching rotation.

Right-handed pitcher Jack Leiter has been sent to the 10-day injured list with a right ankle posterior impingement, the team announced. In turn, fellow righty Jose Corniell has been recalled from Triple-A.

Over his 15 starts in 2026, Leiter has limped to a 5.29 ERA and an 83/35 K/BB ratio. His three most recent starts have been brutal, as he has allowed no fewer than four earned runs over four innings pitched. Leiter last pitched against the Minnesota Twins, allowing six earned runs over five innings.

Back in late April, manager Skip Schumaker did admit that Leiter was dealing with a nagging ankle injury. While he has continued to pitch through it, the ankle problem became too much for the right-hander to handle. Now, he’ll have amble time to rest and recover on the IL.

How long he’ll spend there is yet to be seen as there hasn’t been an official timeline revealed. Needless to say though the Rangers will be paying close attention to Leiter and his ankle moving forward.

The right-hander has shown he can be a crucial part of Texas’ rotation. He held a 3.86 ERA and a 148/67 K/BB ratio over 29 starts in 2025.

Once he returns to the team, the Rangers will be expecting Leiter to take a step forward and for his numbers to look more like 2025’s. But the first order of business is simply getting back on the diamond.
