Rams’ Sean McVay confesses harsh truth of how he blew Super Bowl vs. Patriots
The Los Angeles Rams surprised the NFL by drafting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson in the first round, a move that sparked controversy given Matthew Stafford’s recent MVP season. Head coach Sean McVay seemed visibly frustrated during his post-draft press conference, but he later clarified that his demeanor was simply a sign of respect for Stafford.
Reflecting on the rookie, McVay described the evaluation process as enjoyable and praised Simpson as a “football junkie” who plays with excellent timing and rhythm.
As McVay considers the future of his offense, he is also looking back at past failures.
During an appearance on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast, the Rams coach took full responsibility for the disappointing 13-3 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LIII.
He acknowledged that the experience was humbling and that it was “too big” for him at the time. “I didn’t see the game, I didn’t adjust, and I feel like I cost a lot of people,” McVay admitted.
He expressed that his poor coaching led him to believe he wouldn’t be satisfied until he finally won a championship, which transformed him into a “maniac” heading into the subsequent season.
McVay ultimately secured a championship ring after trading Jared Goff for Stafford in 2021.
However, that blockbuster deal also brings with it a sense of lingering guilt.
The head coach expressed regret over not being transparent with Goff during the trade process, admitting that he lacked the courage, clarity, and professionalism needed to communicate effectively.
