Rams rumors: Matthew Stafford reason for Sean McVay’s subdued reaction to Ty Simpson pick
Nearly everyone believes that Sean McVay was unhappy with the Los Angeles Rams selecting Ty Simpson in the first round of the NFL Draft. Mainly due to his odd behavior while fielding questions from media members after the franchise made the pick. However, the rumor mill is offering a different point of view as to why McVay reacted the way he did, and it involves Matthew Stafford.
Rumors suggest that the 40-year-old head coach may have purposely acted the way he did to downplay his excitement level to ensure confidence in Stafford for next season, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. Additionally, McVay and Les Snead reportedly make every decision together, which would also suggest McVay was and is in on the Simpson pick.
“Multiple team sources said they believe McVay might have felt the need to downplay the pick in order to accentuate his confidence in Stafford,” reported Fowler. “‘He will be cautious and protective of Matt, and rightfully so,’ a team source said. ‘I think Sean is excited for the pick. The appreciation for the tape was the biggest thing.’
“A source with direct knowledge of the situation put it more bluntly: McVay ‘absolutely’ was on board with the pick, noting that Snead and McVay attack all decisions together. ‘All indications to me were they were in lockstep,’ a separate team source said.”
Upon drafting the former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback, Sean McVay and the Rams made it very clear that Matthew Stafford is still the man in Los Angeles. Several reporters and insiders during the draft claimed during the draft that Simpson is the backup essentially until Stafford decides to retire, whenever that may be.
Simpson, who is 23 years old, joins the Rams after playing one year as a starter at Alabama. He showed flashes of potential, but the common belief is that he needs one or two years of development before taking over the reins in L.A. He finished last season at Alabama with 3,567 passing yards and 28 touchdowns while completing 64.5% of his pass attempts.
