Raiders prospect Fernando Mendoza’s ‘corny’ TV persona called out ahead of No. 1 pick selection

As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, the Las Vegas Raiders seem poised to select Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick. While some analysts have referred to this as a “weak” quarterback class, high-ranking executives and scouts hold a different view. In a recent report for The Athletic, one anonymous executive even ranked Mendoza higher than past top prospects such as Cam Ward and Drake Maye.

“I think he has the answers to the test,” the executive stated. “I loved Cam Ward, but Fernando’s a better prospect than him… I feel much better about Fernando than I did about Drake — and I like Drake.”

However, Mendoza’s public persona has sparked some debate among scouts, and according to insights shared by Tom Pelissero on X, an NFC scouting director expressed that Mendoza often feels “robotic” when speaking to the media.

“When you talk to him one-on-one, he’s fine,” the director noted.

“But when the camera comes on, it’s almost like he has to adopt this quarterback persona… It’s as if someone gave him a checklist and told him to hit all those points when the camera is on. His personality comes across as a bit quirky… He might seem a little corny because he’s trying to be perfect.”

Despite this “corny” perception, scouts emphasize that his teammates relate well to him and appreciate his genuine leadership behind the scenes.

Mendoza’s intense desire for perfection was evident during his visit with the Raiders. After a FaceTime call with part-owner Tom Brady, the Indiana star spent over 30 minutes at a whiteboard diagramming complex plays for the coaching staff.

While the staff was highly impressed, Mendoza’s internal standards are so high that he left the room visibly frustrated.

As ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, Mendoza was overheard saying, “I messed that up,” as he walked away, a level of self-criticism that further underscores his elite mental makeup, which impresses the Raiders’ front office.
