Raiders owner Mark Davis issues strong statement on Kirk Cousins amid Maxx Crosby punishment

The future in Las Vegas finally looks bright after years of trial and (mostly) error from top to bottom.

Since Mark Davis took over the Las Vegas Raiders in 2011, the team has cycled through nine head coaches, and seven starting quarterbacks.

The Raiders have zero playoff wins to show for it, and this offseason, Davis relinquished football control to general manager John Spytek and minority owner Tom Brady.

The Silvers & Black made their moves, poaching Klint Kubiak from the defending-champion Seattle Seahawks and drafting Fernando Mendoza with the No.1 pick.

Mendoza is undoubtedly the future of the franchise, but they are not ready to start the rookie just yet.

Kubiak has already named Kirk Cousins as the team’s Week 1 starter, and Davis has been nothing but impressed by the veteran so far.

“But all I see is him finding open guys and getting the ball to them,” Davis told Paul Gutierrez of Raiders.com.

“Kirk Cousins is looking really good. He’s a pro quarterback. It’s the Tom Brady effect.”

“This is my 15th year in charge and we haven’t gotten it right yet.

“But this year feels good. Like I said, football is cyclical. In 15 years, we might have gotten it right. And I say ‘we,’ not ‘me.’ Because it’s a team effort. It’s about the ‘we.’”

Kubiak’s decision to name Cousins was unsurprising given both he and Spytek had both shared concerns about throwing a rookie straight into the fire.

Cousins was released by the Atlanta Falcons just two-years into his four-year, $180 million deal.

It was a tumultuous for the 37-year-old time in Atlanta, with the Falcons immediately blindsiding him when they drafted quarterback Michael Penix Jr. just six weeks after signing him.

The Raiders will be the fourth NFL franchise that Cousins, who might not make it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, has played on.

Training camp scuffles are not uncommon, but it feels like 2026 has seen an unusual amount of fights.

Kenneth Walker has gotten into it twice with his new Kansas City Chiefs teammates and Ja’Marr Chase has been ripping helmets off.

As for the Raiders, they had their first scuffle on Friday.

Cousins, who has been taking all of the first-team reps over Mendoza, got into a fight with star defensive end Maxx Crosby, which led to both being held out of practice Saturday for disciplinary reasons.

According to ESPN, Crosby hit Cousins twice during the team period. When Crosby hit Cousins’ arm a second time, the veteran lost it and got into Crosby’s face, grabbing his jersey while both exchanged words before it was broken up.

They continued to practice after the fracas but remained on the sideline during the 11-on-11 period.

“We have very clear expectations on how we want to practice and how we want to go about our business,” Kubiak said.

“We violated that yesterday, so (we) held those guys out, that’s all I’m gonna say about it.”

Kubiak added that both players will return to practice on Monday.
