PSG vs Rennes predictions and betting tips – Parisians must bounce back
Paris Saint-Germain swept all before them on multiple fronts last season, and they are thriving in this year’s Champions League too. But Luis Enrique’s men are not having everything their own way at home.
After losing to Monaco last time out, PSG will be looking to return to winning ways against an in-form Rennes team on Saturday.

PSG vs Rennes predictions
In English football, you will often hear references to a ‘big six’. In France, there is only really a ‘big one’.
Paris Saint-Germain dominate the scene in Ligue 1. Owned by Qatar, they are by far and away the richest club in the division and have been for more than a decade.
Given that, you might expect PSG to have done better over the last 15 years or so. The club from the capital have been France’s top performers in that time, winning numerous domestic trophies under several different managers, yet they have not been as imperious as, say, Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
Indeed, PSG have finished second in Ligue 1 on no fewer than three occasions since being bought by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011.
In their very first season post-takeover, PSG were runners-up to Montpellier. In 2016/17, a Monaco team featuring a young Kylian Mbappe were crowned champions. In 2020/21, Lille won the title ahead of the Parisians.
Every few years, then, PSG slip up in the league. Could this season offer another surprise title winner in France?
It is too early to say, and PSG remain strong favourites to finish first. Yet it is fair to say they have not had everything their own way up to now.
At the beginning of December, Luis Enrique’s charges are second in the standings. A 1-0 defeat by Monaco last time out allowed Lens to take top spot. It could have been even worse for PSG: had Marseille beaten Toulouse last Saturday, the champions would be third right now.
PSG are thriving in the Champions League, where only Arsenal have collected more points after five rounds of fixtures in the league phase.
Back home, however, they have not been at their best. The absence of a proper pre-season did not help. Neither did the injury crisis PSG suffered in the autumn.
Even so, Luis Enrique’s men have been mediocre up to now. Nine wins in 14 matches is not a particularly impressive record given their structural and financial advantages. Five victories in their last 10 league outings also represents a disappointing return.
Marseille and Lille have both outscored PSG, with the former outdoing them on expected goals difference. Bad luck is not to blame, then. Whatever the problem, Luis Enrique needs to sort it out as soon as possible.

PSG vs Rennes betting tips
Paris Saint-Germain are under pressure to collect maximum points against Rennes this weekend.
PSG to find a way
PSG’s problems have mostly come on their travels. They have won only half of their eight games at opposition stadiums, compared to five in six at the Parc des Princes.
Having conquered Europe last season, PSG have arguably struggled to get themselves up for run-of-the-mill league games this term.
That has been a particularly significant issue on the road, but their superior quality has usually got them over the line when playing in front of their own supporters.
PSG should similarly emerge victorious on Saturday, but Rennes will have their moments. After all, they have won four games on the bounce and have scored in eight consecutive matches.

Tight first half
Rennes finished 12th last season, but they are targeting European football this time around. They are currently fifth in the table, with no team in Ligue 1 having lost fewer games.
That is evidence of how difficult Rennes are to play against. Habib Beye’s boys have a knack for staying in games. Since the opening weekend, they have lost only one match – and that was by a slender one-goal margin.
Rennes should therefore have some success in holding PSG at bay for part of this match.
Five teams have a better record than PSG in the first half of home games, so Rennes will fancy their chances of getting to the break with the score level.

Dembele on scoresheet?
Ousmane Dembele has had an injury-hit start to the season, but the France international will hope to stay fit from now until the end of the campaign.
After a calf injury ruled him out of recent meetings with Lyon and Le Havre, Dembele appeared as a second-half substitute against Tottenham Hotspur and Monaco.
He is now ready to return to the starting XI, with the forward set to be part of Luis Enrique’s front three on Saturday.
A former Rennes player, the Ballon d’Or holder can get his name on the scoresheet against his old club.
