Predicting Padres’ biggest move before MLB trade deadline
The San Diego Padres have reached the point where difficult decisions can no longer be avoided.
If the front office commits to selling before the July 31 trade deadline, only one player should generate interest outside of closer Mason Miller, and that is left-handed reliever Adrian Morejon.
As painful as it would be to move one of the most reliable arms in the bullpen, it also feels like the most logical move for President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller can make. The Padres cannot think about trading away Mason Miller.
Morejon has been one of San Diego’s most dependable relievers yet again. While he hasn’t replicated the dominant numbers from his 2025 All-Star campaign, he’s still quietly putting together another excellent season. Morejon leads the Padres with seven wins while posting a 3.42 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 58 strikeouts, 15 holds and one save this season.
Those are the numbers of a pitcher every contender wants heading into October.
The trade market always favors premium bullpen arms, especially left-handers capable of handling the seventh, eighth, or even ninth inning. Morejon checks every box. He’s battle-tested, misses bats, and has shown he can neutralize both left-handed and right-handed hitters.
That’s exactly why the Padres should capitalize.

San Diego has never been afraid to make bold moves under Preller. The organization has consistently shown a willingness to buy aggressively when the postseason is within reach and sell valuable pieces when the season slips away. If the Padres are outside the playoff picture in late July (which they are now), hanging onto Morejon simply because he’s popular in the clubhouse would be shortsighted.
His value may never be higher, plus, he will become a free agent at the end of the season.
Elite relief pitching is one of the most expensive commodities at the deadline. Every July, contenders convince themselves they’re one bullpen arm away from a World Series run. Morejon would immediately become one of the best relievers available, and a bidding war could net San Diego multiple high-upside prospects or even a controllable major league-ready player. That’s the kind of opportunity rebuilding clubs can’t afford to pass up.
Some fans will understandably push back. Bullpen pieces are difficult to replace, and Morejon has been part of the Padres organization for years, and he has become a fan favorite. There’s something to be said for keeping proven talent around rather than creating another hole to fill during the offseason.
Relief pitchers are also among the most volatile assets in baseball. One injury or one down season can erase a significant amount of trade value. The Padres have already seen firsthand how quickly bullpen depth can disappear. Waiting for an even better offer next winter could easily backfire.
If San Diego believes it can contend again in 2027, the smarter long-term play is turning one elite reliever into multiple pieces that strengthen the organization’s future.
That’s not waving the white flag. It’s recognizing where the club stands and maximizing one of its most valuable trade chips while contenders are desperate enough to pay a premium. No move at the deadline would be easy. Trading Morejon would undoubtedly sting, especially considering everything he’s meant to the bullpen over the last few seasons.
But if the Padres are serious about building another sustainable contender instead of chasing an unlikely postseason berth, dealing Adrian Morejon may end up being the smartest decision they make all year.
