Prairie View A&M in contention for new Texas football honor

After winning the SWAC championship in Tremaine Jackson’s first season, Prairie View A&M is in line for a new Texas football honor. During the opening week of the 2026 football season, Prairie View A&M will be facing off against Tarleton State for the Chancellor’s Cup.

The Texas A&M System announced the Chancellor’s Cup, created to celebrate “competition, school pride, and excellence” across the system’s universities. Following the game, Texas A&M System Chancellor Glenn Hegar will present the cup to the winning team between Prairie View A&M and Tarleton State.

Hegar spoke about the creation of the Chancellor’s Cup.

“Our universities have their own colors, mascots, fight songs and traditions, and that is exactly how it should be. The Chancellor’s Cup gives us a way to celebrate that pride, stir up a little friendly competition and remind folks across Texas just how much talent and spirit we have across the A&M System.”

Prairie View A&M President Tomikia P. LeGrande expressed her excitement for Prairie View A&M being one of the first institutions to compete in the Chancellor’s Cup.

“Prairie View A&M brings history, pride and excellence into every competition. We are honored to help launch The Chancellor’s Cup, and our students, alumni and fans will be ready to support the Panthers as we compete for the first one.”

Meanwhile, Tarleton State President James Hurley said he feels honored that the institution will host the first Chancellor’s Cup game.

“Tarleton State is proud to host the first Chancellor’s Cup game in Stephenville. This new tradition will bring students, alumni, fans and communities together while showcasing the energy and momentum across the Texas A&M System under Chancellor Hegar’s leadership!”

The press release from the Texas A&M University System also indicated that the Chancellor’s Cup won’t be limited to football, and it could include other sports across men’s and women’s athletics in the future.
