Pope Leo obviously smote Spike Lee for wearing Knicks jersey with his name on it

Somewhere, likely at the Vatican, Chicago-born and Bulls fan Pope Leo is smiling after seeing New York Knicks superfan Spike Lee wearing a jersey with his name on it at the team’s latest playoff game against the Atlanta Hawks.

Lee was spotted at Madison Square Garden wearing a custom #14 jersey that read, “Pope Leo,” on the back. It’s the same jersey that he had gifted the Pope back in November 2025.

However, upon being shown at the game wearing the jersey, the Knicks began falling apart, ultimately collapsing despite entering the fourth quarter with a 12-point lead.

The Knicks had the chance to go up 2-0 on the Hawks in the playoffs, entering the fourth quarter up 91-79. Atlanta proceeded to outscore New York 28-15 in the final period to secure the win.

This was an epic collapse and a potential swing in the momentum of the series. The Knicks now head to Atlanta to play Games 3 and 4 before returning to the Garden.

Jalen Brunson did his best to will the Knicks to victory. He scored 29 points, but he only made 10 of his 26 shots. He did have seven assists, though.

Karl-Anthony Towns was also efficient, scoring 18 points, making eight of his 12 shots. Surprisingly, he wasn’t the team’s leading rebounder, as Josh Hart logged 13. Hart had a double-double with his 15 points and 13 rebounds and was four assists shy of a triple-double.

CJ McCollum dominated throughout the game, putting up 32 points. Jonathan Kuminga was the team’s second-highest scorer in the game, scoring 19 points off the bench.

New York has a couple of days to settle in and refocus before their next game. The Knicks and Hawks will next play on Thursday, Apr. 23, in Atlanta. The game will be broadcast on Prime Video for those not in attendance.
