Keys to Pistons vs. Magic Matchup
The Pistons responded exactly how they needed to in Game 2 with a completely refreshed performance on the defensive end. While the Magic shot just 33% from the field and 25% from three, much of that could have been attributed to the lockdown efforts from Ausar Thompson (two steals, one block), Duncan Robinson (two steals, one block), and Tobias Harris (two steals, two blocks). The Pistons remained in the passing lanes all night and did a great job helping with doubles on Paolo Banchero’s driving attempts, limiting the Orlando star to just 18 points on a 7-17 (0-2 3PT) off night for him.
Heading back to Orlando, the Magic should have much more confidence in their shooting from the field as that’s where they typically thrive as a team. Franz Wagner has averaged 21.5 PPG against Detroit during the regular season, but he’s been held under 20 point through the first two games of this series. Expect him to be a more profound factor throughout this game as the Magic are a hard team to beat when he’s chasing buckets aggressively.
Cade Cunningham will continue leading the Pistons with his scoring and passing efforts, notching 11 assists in a much more familiar performance to what we’re used to seeing out of him. Throughout this season, the Pistons have gone 30-7 in games where Cunningham is able to record 10+ assists. They’re a far better team when he’s able to create for others while exploiting the defensive weaknesses, so expect him to attack in a similar manner after having a few looks at this Orlando defense.
The Magic will also be counting on Desmond Bane to catch his rhythm from three as he shot a solid 39.1% during the regular season. However, he’s just 3-15 from deep in this series against Detroit, needing to improve quickly if the Magic want to keep up with the offense of the Pistons. For Detroit, Kevin Huerter is shooting 50% from three during this series and averages 12.0 PPG against Orlando, slightly higher than his overall 10.0 PPG season average.
Pistons vs. Magic Prediction and Pick
This series has been a back-and-forth battle and evident from Game 2, both defenses are beginning to settle in following Detroit’s statement win. The Magic should be expected to improve from their poor shooting night as they’ve been very consistent at home this season. The Pistons have been just as effective on the road, however, and they should have a much better read on this Orlando team following two games at home.
For the Magic to be successful in Game 3, they’ll need to heavily rely on their three-point accuracy as both teams have been sure-handed in rebounding the ball. If Franz Wagner and Desmond Bane are able to significantly improve their performance, they should have a solid chance at home as the short underdogs.
Neither game has really felt close as the winner has lead throughout the vast majority of each game. This could come down to whichever team starts hot and can maintain a lead throughout this game. Feeling confident after their last win, we’ll roll with the Detroit Pistons to cover the spread as they earn a 2-1 lead in this series.
Final Pistons-Magic Game 3 Prediction & Pick: Detroit Pistons -2.5 (-110); UNDER 213.5 (-115)
