Pirates call up ex-World Series champion amid bullpen shakeup
The Pittsburgh Pirates currently have the sixth-best bullpen in MLB, but that doesn’t mean they are settling for that as their ceiling. Pittsburgh is still trying to fine-tune the group battling injuries, and it did so on Wednesday by making a couple of roster moves, according to the Pirates’ X account.
“The Pittsburgh Pirates today selected the contract of RHP Chris Devenski from Triple-A Indianapolis. Pittsburgh optioned LHP Hunter Barco to Indianapolis following Tuesday night’s game vs. St. Louis. RHP Ryan Harbin was designated for assignment to make room for Devenski on the 40-man roster, which remains full,” the team announced.
Devenski won a World Series with the Houston Astros in 2017, making 62 appearances during the regular season with a 2.68 ERA. He was one of their most reliable arms out of the bullpen, but it all sort of fell apart in the postseason with a 9.00 ERA in 10 games. He still got the ring regardless, but it was a disappointing time for him and the team.
Devenski would return to the World Series with the Astros again in 2019, again recording a 9.00 ERA over three games. Houston would fail to win the title that season, and Devenski would last just one more season with Houston.
The righty made stops with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Angels, Tampa Bay Rays, and New York Mets since leaving the Astros, never finding the same success as he did in Houston. However, his 1.13 ERA in five AAA appearances this season is worthy of a look from the Pirates to solidify their bullpen.
