Phillies streaking under interim manager Don Mattingly

The Philadelphia Phillies have been given a jolt since Don Mattingly took over as interim manager. Mattingly remains undefeated as the team’s skipper, per Talkin’ Baseball.

Mattingly is 4-0 as manager of the team, after taking over from Rob Thomson. Thomson was fired shortly after the team endured a 10-game losing streak.

Philadelphia had tried to hire Alex Cora, after Thomson’s firing. Cora was recently fired from the Boston Red Sox. He wanted to spend more time with his family, so Mattingly was given the job.

The Phillies won again on Friday, defeating the Miami Marlins 6-5. Philadelphia improved to 13-19 on the season.

“We’ve got to win ballgames,” Philadelphia pitcher Zack Wheeler said, per MLB.com. “You can’t get too far behind. The Braves are a really good team, and they’re already a good bit ahead. So we’ve got some catching up to do, but we’re playing better baseball right now. And like I said, it starts with the staff.”

Wheeler was dominant on the mound Friday. He allowed just one earned run in six innings worked. He also struck out eight batters.

“I saw [Wheeler] here in Miami after [Jacob] deGrom one night,” said Mattingly. “And I’m like, he’s better than deGrom. Throwing bullets. A guy that’s coming back from what he went through last year, it’s early in the season. Probably the velo is going to keep ticking [up] a little bit as we go, but you still get swing and miss.

“And he knows what he’s doing. He’s not going to give in. It’s just been impressive to see what he can do, and you feel like it’s just going to get better and better.”

Philadelphia plays the Marlins again on Saturday afternoon.
