Phillies’ Jhoan Duran lands on IL with oblique injury

The Philadelphia Phillies’ bullpen received some bad news on Saturday, as it sounds like Jhoan Duran is heading to the IL. Philly announced several roster moves after making its final decision on Duran.

Reports indicate that the 28-year-old closer was placed on the 15-day IL due to a left oblique strain, according to Jeff Skversky of Fox29 Philadelphia. The Phillies will officially be without their star closer for at least the next 15 days. The front office shifted things around with the roster upon the injury news.

“Jhoan Duran was placed on the 15-day injured list (retro to 4/15) with a left oblique strain,” reported Skversky. “Otto Kemp was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Felix Reyes had his contract selected from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and will wear No. 29. Seth Johnson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Pedro Leon was released.”

With Duran out, the Phillies are likely to give setup man Brad Keller closer duties. Jose Alvarado could also see some closing opportunities. But Keller has been more consistent on the mound to begin the 2026 campaign (4.70 ERA vs. Alvarado’s 10.50 ERA).

Luckily, Jhoan Duran was only placed on the 15-day IL, as he has been lights out so far this season. In seven appearances, the five-year veteran owns a 1.35 ERA and 0.750 WHIP while recording eight strikeouts and five saves.

The Phillies will play their first game without Duran on the active roster this season on Saturday in a home contest against the Atlanta Braves. That matchup is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m. EST. A victory for Philadelphia will tie the three-game series 1-1.
