Phillies’ Bryce Harper’s ‘disgusting’ Cristopher Sanchez claim is nothing but praise

It was a month to remember for starting Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sanchez, and he was recognized for it by being named the National League Pitcher of the Month for May.

In May, Sanchez went 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA. He struck out 45 opposition batters while allowing only three walks in 39 innings of work. For Sanchez, it’s the second time in his career that he’s won the award.

Teammate Bryce Harper attested to Sanchez’s effectiveness on the mound, lauding the different pitches in his arsenal and the innovative way he uses them.

“It’s kind of crazy to think about, obviously, the way that he pitches. I was talking with him about it yesterday. I’ve seen it from the jump, just the way that he approaches it, and just super special. I mean, his changeup, fastball, slider, everything he throws up there, I think it’s a little new in today’s game. Him being able to throw strikes plus pitches on a lot of his stuff, the game now is chasing velocity and spin rates. He uses that changeup; you can’t say enough about him the way he prepares. I mean, all of the above. He’s all of it.”

Harper concluded with a very specific way of describing Sanchez, albeit in endearing terms.

“He is a very special pitcher and individual,” he said. “He is disgusting.”

So far this season, Sanchez has compiled a 6-2 record with a solid 1.47 ERA and 95 strikeouts along with a 1.12 WHIP. The Phillies, who are 31-29, continue their series against the visiting San Diego Padres on Wednesday evening.
