Penn State Nittany Lions win recrutiment battle for 4-star RB
Four-star running back Aiden Gibson became the latest addition to Penn State Nittany Lions football’s 2027 recruiting class Tuesday night after announcing his commitment live on CBS Sports College Football YouTube. The Woodruff, South Carolina native chose Penn State over Rutgers, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Louisville after a recruiting battle that intensified over the past several months.
Gibson became the Nittany Lions’ 16th commitment in the 2027 cycle and the program’s first running back pledge in the class. Penn State also secured its first commitment from the Carolinas this cycle. The addition continued a productive stretch on the recruiting trail for the Nittany Lions, who added 11 commitments in April and three more in May.
The 6-foot-1, 212-pound tailback is regarded as one of the top running backs in the country. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Gibson is the No. 22 running back nationally, the No. 322 overall prospect, and the No. 8 player in South Carolina. 247Sports ranks him even higher at No. 12 among running backs and No. 228 overall in the Top247.
Gibson enjoyed a highly productive junior year at Woodruff High School during the 2025 season. In 11 games, he rushed for 1,611 yards and 21 touchdowns on 205 carries while averaging 7.9 yards per carry. He also recorded 24 receptions for 387 yards and four receiving touchdowns, finishing with nearly 2,000 total yards from scrimmage.
Penn State first offered Gibson on Jan. 29, and the relationship quickly developed despite the late entry into his recruitment. Running backs coach Savon Huggins was influential in the commitment, while Gibson also pointed to the culture being built by head coach Matt Campbell and the Nittany Lions academics as factors in his decision.
Gibson only visited Penn State once before committing, making an unofficial trip to Happy Valley in early April for a spring practice. He is scheduled to return for an official visit on June 12 and plans to attend a game in Beaver Stadium this fall.
