Pelicans’ Jamahl Mosley drops bold ‘scratch the surface’ take on Zion Williamson
The New Orleans Pelicans recently hired Jamahl Mosley to be their next head coach following his dismissal from the Orlando Magic. The Pelicans are hoping to bounce back after a rough 2025-26 season that saw them finish toward the bottom of the Western Conference standings.
The Pelicans somehow still have Zion Williamson on their roster after years of trade rumors and injury concerns, and based on Mosley’s latest comments, the team is still viewing him as a key piece of their plans moving forward.
“Jamahl Mosley says Zion Williamson hasn’t even ‘scratched the surface of what he can do.’ He wants to open the floor for Zion and says health is also a major key to unlocking Zion further,” reported Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN on X, formerly Twitter.
Health has always been a major concern for Williamson, and in 2025-26, he was the most available that he’s ever been during his career. Still, it wasn’t enough to get the Pelicans anywhere close to playoff contention, and some have started to notice a decline in Williamson’s signature explosiveness and athleticism when he’s on the court.
It’s unclear what the Pelicans plan to do this summer in order to improve their roster. Numerous teams around the league hold interest in players like Herb Jones and Trey Murphy III, but up to this point, the New Orleans brass has been hesitant to part ways with them, for reasons known only to them.
The Pelicans also don’t have their first round pick this year thanks to last summer’s deal with the Atlanta Hawks.
The fact that Mosley seems excited about the chance to coach Williamson would seem to indicate that they don’t plan on moving the power forward anytime soon.
