Patriots rumors: Why New England may test Christian Gonzalez in contract standoff

The New England Patriots should know by now the immense value that Christian Gonzalez adds to their team. One of the biggest reasons why they were within striking distance during the second half of Super Bowl 60 was because the star cornerback kept Seattle Seahawks game-wrecker Jaxon Smith-Njigba in check. A superb quarterback and strong head coach were obviously major catalysts for the historic one-year turnaround, but this franchise needed an anchor in the secondary to get back into title contention.

Again, the Pats should understand all this. But they also understand the risk of investing a substantial amount of money on a player who has experienced injury issues through his first three NFL seasons. Put it all together, and you have an old-fashioned contract standoff. There is no bad blood as of now, and the expectation is that both sides will reach an agreement at some point, but this situation could carry on for a while.

Just ask this Patriots insider. “So what I have heard is that I would not expect any sort of update until training camp,” Boston Sports Journal founder and editor Greg Bedard said on his podcast, per Patriots Wire’s Danny Jaillet. “And if that’s the case, I think that’s where the Patriots are.

“I think they sort of like shrug and say, ‘We’ll see where we are at at training camp.’ And if that’s the case, then I think it’s going to drag into training camp. I think there’s an easy, sort of, compromise from both sides. It just depends on how far Gonzalez wants to push this.”

Veteran players report to camp on July 24, which leaves New England and Christian Gonzalez more than a month to work out a lucrative deal that will make the 2024 Second-Team All-Pro and 2025 Pro Bowl selection one of the highest-paid CBs in the league. He recorded a 64.4 passer rating allowed and seven pass breakups in 14 games last season, according to Pro Football Focus.
