Patriots HC Mike Vrabel to miss NFL Draft Day 3 as he seeks counseling

The New England Patriots are coning off of a shockingly successful season that saw them win the AFC before falling in Super Bowl LX to the Seattle Seahawks. However, the talk around the Pats this offseason has been about anything but football, as head coach Mike Vrabel has gotten himself in some hot water.

Now, the noise around Vrabel is going to bleed into the Patriots’ NFL Draft plans. He is not going to be with the team for Day 3 of the NFL Draft as he seeks counseling following the publication of pictures with he and former Athletic reporter Dianna Russini, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.

“As I said the other day, I promised my family, this organization and this team that I was going to give them the best version of me that I can possibly give them,” Vrabel told Reiss on Wednesday. “In order to do so, I have committed to seeking counseling, starting this weekend,” Vrabel said Wednesday night. “This is something that I have given a lot of thought to and is something I would advise a player to do if I was counseling them.

“I have always wanted to lead by example, and I believe this is what I have to do to be the best husband, father and coach that I possibly can be. This is not an easy thing for me to admit, but it is one that I know will make me a better person. I appreciate the support that everyone has given me and promise a stronger resolve as a result.”

Photos of Vrabel and Russini recently emerged of the two embracing and holding hands at an Arizona resort during the league meetings. Russini later resigned from her position as an NFL insider for The Athletic amid an internal investigation. Vrabel said on Tuesday, his first public media availability since the publication of the photos, that he has had “difficult conversations” with his family and the team about the matter.

By all indications, Vrabel will still be with the team for the first two days of the draft on Thursday and Friday night. New England is slated to pick No. 31 overall on Thursday night in the first round.
