Patriots add ex-Giants DC to Mike Vrabel’s staff

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has found himself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons recently. Still, Vrabel remains focused on making the Patriots as strong as he can in 2026.

To help aid their cause, New England has hired Shane Bowen as a defensive analyst, via Ian Rapoport. Vrabel and Bowen’s connection goes back to their days on the Tennessee Titans.

The now defensive analyst served as outside linebackers coach under Vrabel before getting the promotion to defensive coordinator in 2021. He was in that role through 2023 before taking on the same job with the New York Giants. Bowen was ultimately fired from that post after numerous late game losses.

Still, the coach is coming to New England with plenty of experience. He made his jump to the NFL in 2016 and had been coaching at the college level previously. Furthermore, it’s clear Vrabel believes Bowen provides a valuable defensive leader for New England.

The Patriots finished their 2025 campaign ranked eighth in total defense, allowing 295.2 yards per game. They ranked top 10 in both pass (ninth, 193.5 YPG) and run (sixth, 101.7 YPG) defense. Needless to say, Bowen will have an opportunity to coach up what has become one of the better defenses in the league.

He won’t have as many responsibilities as when he was defensive coordinator, but Bowen is well aware of how Vrabel wants to run his organization. It shouldn’t take long before the defensive analyst is up to speed on how his new franchise operates.

While a defensive analyst signing might fly under the radar over the offense, the Patriots are hopeful Bowen has a significant impact on their defense.
