Matias Galarza proved himself to have made a crucial goal in Paraguay’s victory over Turkiye during Matchday 2 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday night.

Going into the contest, Paraguay was in serious need of a victory. They suffered a stunning 4-1 loss to the United States in their group opener, being unable to keep up with the Americans’ attack throughout the match.

How Matias Galarza, Paraguay played against Turkiye

Matias Galarza came through in a big way for Paraguay, getting them back on the win column after stunning Turkiye 1-0. This game also officially eliminated the Turks from the World Cup with one match to spare, being the second team to suffer this fate after Haiti.

Paraguay suffered a mishap nearing the end of the first half. Star midfielder Miguel Almiron got a red card after talking while covering his mouth, a rule that FIFA implemented to prevent offensive language between players.

Despite this, the Paraguayans put forth an astounding defensive effort to keep Turkiye attackers at bay. The Turks also failed to make their shots in the biggest moments, giving their opponents a lot of relief in the end.

Paraguay improved to third place in the Group D standings with three points after the win. They are firmly above Turkiye while trailing Paraguay and the United States.

Paraguay will look forward to its group finale, staying put in the Bay Area. They take on Australia in competition for second place in Group D, as kickoff is set for June 25 at 10 p.m. ET.
