Panama vs England predictions and betting tips – Three Lions to sign off the group in style

England close out Group L in the early hours of Sunday morning, and they do so from a position of comfort.

Thomas Tuchel’s side sit top on four points, level with Ghana, and a draw is enough to send them through as group winners. Panama, by contrast, arrive already eliminated, rooted to the bottom without a point or a goal to their name after two narrow 1-0 defeats.

This is a dead rubber for Los Canaleros and a chance for England to finish the group with momentum, even if Tuchel rotates. I am backing the Three Lions to dominate a stubborn, beaten side, and I have three tips I like at the prices.

Panama vs England predicted lineups

Tuchel has confirmed he is not afraid to make changes, though he hinted at a “moderate” reshuffle rather than wholesale rotation, with one eye on the knockout rounds.

The big call is in attack, where the manager hopes Bukayo Saka is fit enough to make his first start of the tournament after two appearances off the bench, with Noni Madueke the man under threat.

Encouragingly for those eyeing the midfield markets, Tuchel singled out Elliot Anderson for praise after the Ghana game, so I expect the Nottingham Forest man to keep his place.

Jordan Pickford stays in goal, with John Stones and Marc Guehi the likely central-defensive pairing.

  • England predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; James, Stones (c), Guehi, O’Reilly; Rice, Anderson; Saka, Bellingham, Rashford; Kane

Panama boss Thomas Christiansen will set his side up to frustrate in a familiar 5-4-1 low block, the shape that kept both Ghana and Croatia to a single goal.

Captain and record cap-holder Anibal Godoy anchors the midfield, with Ismael Diaz their likeliest source of a goal should one arrive, though neither Jose Fajardo nor Cecilio Waterman has threatened so far.

  • Panama predicted XI (5-4-1): Mejia; Murillo, Escobar, Cordoba, Andrade, Blackman; Barcenas, Godoy (c), Carrasquilla, Diaz; Fajardo

Panama vs England predictions

The scoreline from England’s 0-0 with Ghana flatters the opposition. Tuchel’s men had 78.9 per cent of the ball, fired in 19 shots and racked up 2.09 expected goals, but managed only three on target.

That was a finishing problem, not a creation problem, and across both group games England have piled up 6.72 expected goals from 41 shots.

The chances are flowing, and a more clinical evening is overdue against a side with far less defensive quality than Ghana.

Panama, for their part, have offered next to nothing going forward, generating just 1.86 expected goals across two matches and failing to score in either.

They are organised and willing to scrap, which is why I am wary of expecting a 2018-style rout when Tuchel may rest key men, but a beaten, blunt opponent sitting deep is exactly the kind of test England’s depth is built to pass.

I expect the Three Lions to control this from the first whistle, break the block down and see it out without alarm. I am going for a comfortable 2-0 England win.

Panama vs England betting tips

Here are my three bets for the game.

Tuchel’s defence to keep the door bolted

The most rotation-proof angle is England’s defensive solidity. Panama have not scored at this World Cup, mustering a meagre 1.86 expected goals in two games, and they carry no obvious threat regardless of who Tuchel picks.

England, meanwhile, shut Ghana out and kept clean sheets in all eight of their World Cup qualifiers, so the platform is well established. With Pickford behind a solid back line and Panama reduced to playing for pride, a clean-sheet win looks the soundest way into this game.

England to lay siege from the corner flag

When a side parks the bus, the corner count climbs, and England have already shown the pattern in this group, winning nine corners against Croatia and eight against Ghana.

Panama will sit deep, defend their box in numbers and concede territory all night, funnelling England’s attacks into blocked shots and forced set pieces.

That is a recipe for a steady stream of corners whoever wears the shirt, and the eight-or-more line gives a little cushion on a total England have already cleared or matched twice.

Anderson to leave his mark in midfield

Elliot Anderson has quietly become a key cog in this England midfield, and Tuchel’s public praise suggests he is in no danger of being rotated out.

His role as the deeper of the two midfielders is to screen the defence and snuff out Panama’s rare counters, and that job brings fouls. He has committed two fouls in each of England’s opening two games, a consistent return that makes the two-or-more price look a touch generous.

Against a side that will break quickly when they can, the chances to nip danger in the bud will keep coming.

Important Panama vs England historical facts for betting

  • Kane drew level with Gary Lineker as England’s record World Cup scorer on 10 goals with his brace against Croatia, and another here would make him the outright record holder.
  • Panama have yet to score at this World Cup, managing just 1.86 expected goals across their two group games.
  • England kept a clean sheet in all eight of their World Cup qualifiers.
  • England have racked up nine and eight corners in their two group matches so far.
