Padres slugger Gavin Sheets’ clutch hitting makes unique MLB history vs. Rockies

Thursday afternoon’s contest between the San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies was pure entertainment. The Padres trailed by four runs entering the eighth inning, and then three runs in the ninth before they would come back and take a 10-8 lead to stun the Rockies. To make matters even worse for the Rockies, Gavin Sheets made MLB history against them due to two massive moonshots.

On Friday, April 10, Sheets stepped up to the plate and hit a 3-run walk-off home run against the Rockies in the debut of the new city connects uniforms. The Padres won 5-2 and would go on to sweep Colorado in a 4-game series. Almost two weeks later, Sheets stepped up to the plate down one in the 9th inning. What happened next really hurt the Rockies.

Sheets hit his second 3-run go-ahead home run against the Rockies, and this one happened to be on his birthday. With this swing, Sheets made franchise and MLB history. He is the only one in franchise history to hit a go-ahead or game-winning 3-run homer on his birthday. Furthermore, nobody has ever done this against the same team twice in the same calendar month.

The Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks will meet in Mexico City for a two-game series starting Saturday. Both teams have the day off on Friday.
