Padres’ Manny Machado reveals ‘devastated’ reaction to Nick Castellanos DFA

The San Diego Padres recently designated Nick Castellanos for assignment. On Friday, he was officially released. While the move to designate Castellanos for assignment was surprising, his struggles at the plate were difficult to ignore. Nevertheless, the Padres were “devastated” by the decision according to Manny Machado.

“Yeah it was tough,” Machado said, via Marty Caswell. “I mean, obviously he was a big part of our team… The news got everybody by surprise. I don’t really try to put myself in a GM’s shoes and know why they’re doing the decisions. Obviously we just care about Nick and what he meant to us in the clubhouse.

“We were kind of devastated by it.”

Castellanos, 34, is a veteran with a proven track record. The two-time All-Star joined the Padres this season. He ended up hitting just .191/.221/.339 across 39 games played.

Castellanos could certainly end up receiving another big league opportunity. There are many teams around baseball that would not have a problem with signing a veteran right-handed bat.

As for the Padres, they will move forward following the decision to designate Castellanos for assignment. The ball club has struggled in recent action, as they are just 1-9 across their past 10 games. Overall, San Diego holds a 32-29 record this season. The Padres are currently in third place in the National League West standings.

On Friday, they will begin a three-game series against the New York Mets at home. First pitch for the contest on Friday night is scheduled for 9:40 PM EST in San Diego.
