Padres DFA knuckleball pitcher just days before MLB trade deadline

The San Diego Padres are making roster moves with the MLB trade deadline fast approaching.

On Wednesday, the club announced that it reinstated right-hander Jeremiah Estrada from the 15-day injured list while designating knuckleball pitcher Matt Waldron for assignment. The move comes just two days before the trade deadline as the Padres continue reshaping their roster for a postseason push.

Waldron’s tenure in San Diego could now be coming to an end unless he goes unclaimed on waivers. The right-hander carved out a unique role thanks to his knuckleball, a rarity in today’s game, but consistency proved difficult to find. It didn’t work out the way he had wanted it to. Waldron owns a 7.16 ERA on the season in 32.2 innings. His career ERA is now at 5.19 with over 225 innings of work.

San Diego enters Wednesday’s series finale against the Colorado Rockies riding a four-game winning streak and looking to make it five in a row. The club has gained momentum at the perfect time, with the front office expected to remain active before the trade deadline.

Nobody has a clue what the Padres will do later this week. They are playing well, looking as if they could be buyers with lots of ball left in the season. They need a major push to get there, but it is possible. San Diego is a legit starter and one solid bat away from being MLB contenders with the way some of their stars are playing at the moment. All eyes will be on Mason Miller; however, it makes zero sense to trade him away with over three seasons of control left.
