Packers’ Jonathan Gannon tells Matt LaFleur truth behind defensive philosophy

Jonathan Gannon had multiple offers after being fired by the Arizona Cardinals following their 3-14 season, but he chose to sign with the Green Bay Packers as defensive coordinator.

Gannon replaced Matt Hafley, who was hired to call the shots for the Miami Dolphins.

With the Packers, Gannon will have less pressure, but that does not mean that he is not eager to prove his worth. Curiously, however, he told Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur that he doesn’t have a defensive scheme, as reported by USA Today’s Ryan Wood.

“The point is the game adapts, and I don’t really get caught up in 4-3, 3-4. We’re an NFL-style defense, hopefully,” said Gannon.

“I just believe you’ve got to continually adapt and solve problems every year.”

The Packers were not too shabby on defense last season, allowing just 311.8 yards and 21.2 points per game—both in the upper half of the league’s rankings.

Green Bay’s defensive unit features linebackers Micah Parsons and Zaire Franklin, safeties Evan Williams and Xavier McKinney, and tackle Javon Hargrave. Clearly, Gannon has plenty of weapons to work with.

Gannon has ample experience steering the defense, most recently with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he probably won’t have a hard time doing the same with the Packers.

He recently revealed that he decided to sign with the Packers because of LaFleur and quarterback Jordan Love, whom he described as a “top-tier guy,” as reported by The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman.

“I think Matt’s a savant, so he can go from topic to topic to topic, and you’ve got to be pretty wired up, or you’ll fall behind pretty quick,” said Gannon.

Green Bay finished with a 9-7 record last season, losing to the Chicago Bears in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
