Orioles’ Ryan Helsley gets big update amid elbow injury absence

The Baltimore Orioles have run into the injury bug this season, and the latest person to fall victim was Ryan Helsley. The Orioles recently put the closer on the 15-day injured list because of right elbow inflammation.

It doesn’t seem like an injury too concerning, and they recently offered an update on his status moving forward, according to Andy Kostka of the Baltimore Banner.

“Ryan Helsley, on the injured list for elbow inflammation, will be reevaluated this week before he begins a throwing program. The Orioles say Jackson Holliday and Heston Kjerstad are potentially nearing rehab assignments, depending on evaluations,” Kostka wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Helsley has been the closer in place of Felix Bautista, who won’t return until possibly September at the earliest. In his first season with the Orioles, Helsley has a 2.53 ERA in 10 2/3 innings over 12 appearances, and went 7-for-7 on save opportunities.

With Helsey sidelined, there’s a good chance that the Orioles will use multiple relievers in save situations, such as Andrew Kittredge, Keegan Akin, Tyler Wells, Rico Garcia and Yennier Cano.

The Orioles are currently 15-19, and they’ve been on a recent skid. There’s no doubt that they’ll have to get back on track so they don’t lose control of the season, and Adley Rutschman believes that they can do so.

“It’s a crucial point, and I think our guys are up to the challenge,” Rutschman said.

If the Orioles can survive this stretch with the injuries they have, they should be able to go on a run with it still being quite early in the season.
