Orioles outfielder takes big step forward amid injury recovery

It sounds like the Baltimore Orioles could have one of their key outfielders back in action soon. The latest injury report reveals that another key player, alongside Adley Rutschman and Jackson Holliday, is making progress with his injury.

O’Neill, who is 30 years old, ran and participated in batting practice on Friday, April 17, according to MLB.com. These are the first workouts for the nine-year veteran since being placed on the 7-day IL on April 12.

“O’Neill (concussion) took [running] and took batting practice on April 17,” claimed the injury report.

The Orioles placed O’Neill on the IL after he hit his head while fainting from dehydration stemming from an illness he was previously dealing with. The incident took place on April 9, during one of the club’s off days, after he participated in Baltimore’s 5-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on April 8.

His official return date is up in the air for now. Considering he is bouncing back from a concussion, Tyler O’Neill may not have to go on a rehab assignment. Ultimately, that decision will be up to the organization once he clears concussion protocol.

O’Neill played in 10 games before suffering the concussion. Through 29 at-bats, he has recorded seven hits, one home run, and four RBIs, giving him a .241 batting average and .353 OBP. The Orioles are mainly relying on Taylor Ward, Colton Cowser, and Dylan Beavers in the outfield right now.

We’ll see Baltimore in action again on Saturday, when the club takes on the Cleveland Guardians in the third matchup of a four-game series. A victory will give the Orioles a 2-1 lead entering Game 4 on Sunday.
