Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman’s encouraging injury update comes with a catch

The Baltimore Orioles are hopeful that catcher Adley Rutschman will not have to miss too much time with his ankle injury. Rutschman was recently placed on the injured list as he battles left ankle inflammation. The catcher is feeling better, but he is still not sure when he will be able to return to the field, according to Rich Dubfroff.

“Adley Rutschman’s ankle is feeling better, but doesn’t know when he’ll return,” Dubfroff reported.

The 28-year-old was swinging the bat well before suffering the injury, hitting .294/.385/.471 across 39 plate appearances and 10 games. It was an encouraging start to the season after his down 2025 campaign. An All-Star in 2023 and 2024, Rutschman hit just .220 with a .673 OPS a season ago. However, he was limited to only 94 games played in 2025 after appearing in at least 148 contests in both 2023 and 2024.

The Orioles are hopeful that Rutschman can find his All-Star form again. At the moment, though, the primary focus for Adley Rutschman is to get healthy. The team will continue to monitor and provide updates on his injury status as they are made available.

Baltimore is currently in third place in the American League East standings. The O’s are 2.5 games behind the 11-7 Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the division.

On Friday, the Orioles will play the second of a four-game series in Cleveland against the Guardians. They are looking for a better overall performance after almost getting no-hit on Thursday against Cleveland. Guardians starter Parker Messick carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning before the O’s finally recorded a hit. The Orioles were able to score a couple runs in the inning, but Cleveland still earned a 4-2 win.
