Oklahoma Basketball’s Porter Moser releases statement on Stacey King’s death

The basketball world was thrust into mourning on Sunday upon the news of the passing of former Chicago Bulls center Stacey King at the age of 59. King won three consecutive championships as a member of the first dynasty of the Bulls from 1991 to 1993, and later played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, and Dallas Mavericks.

Before his NBA career began, King played for the Oklahoma Sooners, where he earned National Player of the Year honors in 1989. Shortly after his passing was confirmed, current Oklahoma coach Porter Moser released a touching statement of remembrance in King’s honor.

“We are heartbroken over the passing of Stacey King, a true Oklahoma legend,” Moser said via X. “Stacey was one of the most accomplished and likeable players in OU men’s basketball history, and he meant so much to our program because of his passion for the sport and the university. His smile, energy and spirit were his hallmarks, not to mention that silky-smooth left-handed stroke. His success transcended collegiate athletics with his three NBA titles with the Bulls and stellar broadcasting career, and I was honored to get to know him there in Chicago. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones, and we will thoughtfully honor him throughout our upcoming season. Rest in peace, Stacey.”

During his time at Oklahoma, King averaged 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.0 blocked shots per game in 114 total appearances. He was also named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 1990 as a member of the Bulls, shortly before helping them win three consecutive championships.
