Oilers star Connor McDavid joins Wayne Gretzky on exclusive list after latest award

The 2025-26 campaign did not end the way the Edmonton Oilers may have wanted, being eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Connor McDavid felt the team took a step back this season. Still, McDavid once again had a stellar campaign.

McDavid scored 48 goals and added 90 assists, finishing with 138 points. That was enough for him to win the Ted Lindsay Award. The Ted Lindsay Award is given each year to the NHL’s most outstanding player in the regular season, as voted on by the NHL Players’ Association. It is considered to be the companion award to the Hart Memorial Trophy, which is given to the NHL’s Most Valuable Player as voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association. With the win, McDavid has now won the Ted Lindsay Award five times, which puts him on an exclusive list, according to hockey insider Frank Seravalli.

Only McDavid and Wayne Gretzky have been voted by their peers as the Most Outstanding Player five times. Gretzky won the award when it was known as the Lester B. Pearson Award, before being renamed for Ted Lindsay in 2010. Gretzky won the award four straight seasons, beginning in 1981-82  through 1984-85. After Marion Lemiux broke the streak, Gretzky won again in 1986-97. All five times he won the award, he was a member of the Edmonton Oilers.

McDavid first won the award in 2016-17 and would repeat the next year. He also won in 2020-21 and 2022-23. Only Lemiux has won the award four times.

Further, members of the Oilers have won the most times in NHL history. Gretzky and McDavid account for ten of the wins, while Mark Messier won as a member of the Oilers in 1989-90, and Leon Draisaitl won in 2019-20.
