Oilers’ Mattias Ekholm sounds off on controversial Game 4 ending vs. Ducks

The Edmonton Oilers were defeated by the Anaheim Ducks in Game 4 on Sunday night. As a result, Anaheim has now taken a 3-1 series lead. This was a very back-and-forth game that made for entertaining viewing. However, the contest ended with some major controversy.

Ducks forward Ryan Poehling attempted a pass in overtime. The pass deflected off a body in the low slot and got through Oilers goaltender Tristan Jarry. After some confusion, it was determined that the call on the ice was a goal. The officials reviewed the play and determined that the puck fully crossed the line and was a good goal.

This moment certainly came with some controversy. There is certainly an argument to be made that the puck had fully crossed the line. However, with Jarry’s skate blocking a clear view of the line, it’s hard to know for sure. Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm couldn’t believe the call himself.

“I don’t know how they see it as a conclusive goal. I just don’t,” the veteran rearguard said, via The Athletic’s Chris Johnston.

This could certainly be a pivotal moment in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Oilers lost Game 3 before this, so they are now facing elimination. Their season ended within a matter of days. If that happens, this call will be scrutinized even further than it already is.

In any event, there is nothing Edmonton can do about this now. They have to live with the reality that they are on the brink of elimination. The Oilers will look to prevent that from coming to pass when they return to Rogers Place on Tuesday night for a do-or-die Game 5.
