Oilers captain Connor McDavid gets brutally honest on 3-1 hole vs. Ducks
The Edmonton Oilers have been to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals. After a controversial ending in Game 4 of their Stanley Cup Playoff series with the Anaheim Ducks, the Oilers are now on the brink of elimination.
As the Oilers head back to Edmonton for Game 5, captain Connor McDavid spoke about their situation, per Derek Van Diest of NHL.com.
“We’re in a hole, no doubt about it,” McDavid said. “We have to find a way to get a win at home.”
The Oilers have been in this situation before. Last year, the Oilers were down 0-2 to the Los Angeles Kings in the first round, before winning four straight to win the series. They were also down 3-2 to the Vancouver Canucks in the second round in 2024, before winning the final two games to win the series. That same year, the Oilers would be behind 3-0 to the Florida Panthers, but were able to force a game seven.
“We’re all doing the best we can out there. We’re all working and trying to get it done,” McDavid said. “It’s not really about Connor McDavid here, it’s about two teams that are trying to figure each other out. They’re playing well and we have another level as a group. I still feel there were some good signs tonight.”
Oilers blueliner Mattias Ekholm also knows that a comeback is possible.
“Just look at last year, going down 2-0 against L.A. and coming back and winning four straight,” the Oilers defenseman said. “This group has done it before. It’s not a position we want to be in, honestly, but here we are, and I have all the confidence in the world we can go home, win one game, and put them on their heels.”
If the Oilers are going to make the comeback, the defense and goaltending need to be better. They have allowed four or more goals in each of their three losses, and 20 goals in four games so far in the series.
Game 5 is set for Tuesday night back in Edmonton with a 10 p.m. ET puck drop.
