The quarter-final marks the fifth successive major tournament in which the Three Lions have reached the last eight, including each of the previous three World Cups. Norway, meanwhile, have progressed this far for the first time in their history.
Thomas Tuchel’s side arrive in Miami in impressive form, having won 15 of their previous 16 competitive fixtures. Four of those victories have come during this summer’s World Cup as England have continued to underline their credentials as genuine title contenders.
England topped Group L on seven points after opening with a 4-2 victory over 2018 finalists and 2022 third-place finishers Croatia, before drawing 0-0 with Ghana and wrapping up the group stage with a comfortable 2-0 success over Panama.
Their round-of-32 encounter with DR Congo proved far more dramatic, however. England looked to be heading for a shock elimination for much of the contest before captain Harry Kane struck twice in the closing 15 minutes to complete a remarkable turnaround and send his side through.
The toughest challenge of England’s campaign so far came in the last 16 against co-hosts Mexico in front of more than 80,000 passionate supporters in the high-altitude surroundings of Mexico City. Despite playing the entire second half with 10 men following Jarell Quansah’s dismissal, the Three Lions produced an outstanding display to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory.
England’s World Cup journey ended at the quarter-final stage four years ago when they were beaten 2-1 by eventual finalists France in Qatar. The defending champions would go on to reach the final before narrowly missing out on retaining the trophy after a penalty shootout defeat.

Norway, by contrast, are preparing for the biggest match in the nation’s World Cup history as they contest a quarter-final for the first time.
The Scandinavians had never advanced beyond the last 16 in any of their previous three appearances at the tournament, with their last participation coming in 1998.
Ståle Solbakken’s men have enjoyed an outstanding return to the world stage, winning four of their five matches. Convincing victories over Iraq (4-1) and Senegal (3-2) ensured qualification for the knockout rounds with a game to spare.
After making 10 changes for a 4-1 defeat to France in their final Group I fixture, Norway restored their strongest line-up for the knockout phase and immediately rediscovered their momentum. Consecutive 2-1 victories over Ivory Coast in the round of 32 and five-time world champions Brazil in the last 16 sealed an historic meeting with England.
History favours the Three Lions heading into Saturday’s contest. Norway have won just two of the previous 12 meetings between the nations, with their last victory coming in a World Cup qualifier in Oslo in 1993.
England have also kept Norway scoreless in each of the last four encounters. The Three Lions have won both meetings since the turn of the century, with the most recent arriving in a Wembley friendly in 2014 when Wayne Rooney’s penalty proved the difference between the sides.
