Nico Hoerner tells his side, including regrets, from Dalton Rushing ‘fat f**k’ incident

Last Saturday, the Chicago Cubs lost 12-4 to the Los Angeles Dodgers. One of the viral moments was when Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing was seen mouthing “fat f***” to Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya after Amaya stole second base in the third inning.

Amaya’s teammate, second baseman Nico Hoerner, officially confirmed that Rushing did, in fact, say those words, per Talkin’ Baseball. Moreover, Hoerner wished he had stepped up to Rushing.

“I wish that I had confronted him,” he said. “I was pretty taken aback. At the end of the day, you just wanna have your teammates’ back.”

Hoerner is one of the Cubs’ most vocal leaders on the field and in the clubhouse. Teammates and coaches have often referred to Hoerner as the guy who celebrates the little things, such as making a great block. He was described as a “true pro” by Cubs catcher Carson Kelly.

Also, team president Jed Hoyer has heaped praise on Hoerner for being the off-the-field leader, focused on winning games rather than on his own individual feats.

So it would make sense that he would stick up for his teammates when opponents called them names.

Lately, Rushing appears to be running with his mouth, using expletives in reference to opposing players. On April 22, Rushing appeared to say “f*** em” to Jung Hoo Lee during a home plate collision in the Dodgers/Giants game. Later, Rushing referred to Lee as a “great guy”.

The Cubs are finishing out a three-game series against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.
