NHL rumors: Wild insider confirms Dylan Larkin interest after Red Wings trade request

The news out of Detroit that Dylan Larkin wants to be traded away from the Red Wings has gotten the attention of the decision makers throughout the NHL. Larkin can either fill the role of No. 1 or No. 2 center for most teams, and that should mean that multiple teams will be in contact with Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman to inquire about a potential trade. The Minnesota Wild is one of the first teams that Yzerman is likely to hear from.

There are no guarantees that Yzerman will find a trade partner who makes a legitimate offer for a player who has scored 31 goals or more in each of the last five seasons. However, Yzerman may not want to retain his captain after he has expressed his desire to leave the team.

If Yzerman decides that he wants to move forward with a trade, it seems very likely that he will give the Minnesota Wild strong consideration, per NHL insider Michael Russo of The Athletic. Wild boss Bill Guerin pulled off a huge trade during the season when the Wild acquired defenseman Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks. The Wild had an excellent season and defeated the Dallas Stars in the first round of the playoffs before they lost in the second round to the high-powered Colorado Avalanche.

Guerin has demonstrated he is not afraid to make a big deal and trade key assets to get a star. In the case of bringing in Larkin, he has to be willing to part with at least one of his key players. That means he would likely have to trade at least one of the following players — defenseman Jonas Brodin, center Joel Eriksson Ek or forward Ryan Hartman.

The Wild may also have to part with a developmental prospect and a high draft choice.
