NHL rumors: Pierre LeBrun wants it known Lightning are a legit Zach Werenski trade suitor

After an outstanding season for Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski, rumors abound that he may be on the move at some point soon. According to a new social media post on X from NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, the Tampa Bay Lightning are a possible destination.

Werenski is also reportedly getting interest from the Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers at this time. Columbus is listening to suitors.

“GM Don Waddell is listening to trade offers for reigning Norris Trophy winner Zach Werenski. He wants immediate roster help, not draft picks / prospects,” The Athletic reported on X, formerly Twitter.

The Athletic put together a list of eight teams that would be good fits for Werenski. Tampa Bay wasn’t included, which is why LeBrun added that team to the list.

Along with Dallas, Philadelphia and Carolina, other teams linked to Werenski include: the San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Anaheim Ducks, and Detroit Red Wings. These teams are a mix of contenders, as well as rebuilding projects.

Werenski could essentially end up anywhere.

“Werenski has a full no-move clause until July 1, 2027, then a 10-team no-trade clause for the final year of his contract. In other words, he has complete control for now — and partial control later — over where he will land,” The Athletic reported.

Werenski was voted as the NHL’s top defenseman this past season. He posted a whopping 81 points for the Blue Jackets.

“Waddell never anticipated trading Werenski, but that’s a distinct possibility now that the reigning Norris Trophy winner has indicated he doesn’t plan to re-sign with the Blue Jackets when his current contract expires after the 2027-28 season,” the outlet added.

The Blue Jackets missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs, during the 2025-26 season.
