NHL rumors: Hurricanes checked in on Panthers’ Sergei Bobrovsky ahead of trade deadline
Right now, the Carolina Hurricanes are one win away from what would be their first Stanley Cup victory in 20 years, as they enjoy a three games to two lead over the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final.
Since the midway point of Game 3, the Hurricanes have rolled with goaltender Brandon Bussi between the pipes, replacing Frederik Andersen. And thanks to Bussi’s strong play, Carolina is only a single win away from reaching the mountaintop. However, according to a recently published report from NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun, the Hurricanes had their sights set on another goalie at the NHL Trade Deadline.
Per LeBrun, the Hurricanes spoke with the Florida Panthers regarding goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
“Three months ago, the March 6 trade deadline came and went without a trade for a goalie,” LeBrun wrote earlier this week via the Athletic. “The Hurricanes, league sources confirm, talked to Florida about Sergei Bobrovsky, but the Panthers weren’t going to give away the two-time Stanley Cup champion. Florida was willing to move him but Carolina would have needed to part with at least a second-round pick in my opinion, but talks never escalated past the preliminary discussion so we’ll never know.”
Bobrovsky, whom the Panthers signed to a seven year contract in the summer of 2019, helped lead the club to three straight appearances in the Stanley Cup Final, winning in 2024 and 2025 over the Edmonton Oilers. Whether or not he lands another contract from the Panthers remains to be seen.
