NFL rumors: Jimmy Garoppolo mulling retirement after Rams backup stint
The Los Angeles Rams have had a busy offseason thus far in 2026, recently trading for Kansas City Chiefs star cornerback Trent McDuffie and now counting down the days until the NFL Draft. While the Rams will have Matthew Stafford back for at least another year, the backup quarterback position will be especially important given the star’s well-chronicled injury history.
On Monday, the team got an unexpected update on the status of backup Jimmy Garoppolo as the offseason continues.
“#Rams free agent QB Jimmy Garoppolo, considered their top option as backup QB, is considering retirement, sources say,” reported Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network on X, formerly Twitter. “Jimmy G, who has started 64 games during a 12-year career, has made over $156M in all. He is 34 and is mulling a final decision.”
Indeed, Garoppolo has carved out quite the career for himself, helping lead the San Francisco 49ers to an appearance in the 2019 Super Bowl and having spent the last couple of years as a backup.
Currently, the only other quarterback the Rams have on their roster besides Stafford is fellow former University of Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett IV, who won two championships with the Bulldogs before being drafted by the Rams, but has not yet played in a game for Los Angeles.
If Garoppolo does retire, the Rams would likely scour the free agent market for another quarterback to bring in and add to the depth chart ahead of next season.
It remains to be seen if there will be a set timetable on when Garoppolo will make his decision.
