NFL legend Calvin Johnson gives eye-opening advice to 2026 NFL rookies

Every year, a new bunch of rookies enters the NFL through the NFL draft. More than 200 standout athletes from the collegiate scene get picked up in the pros to get a chance to prove themselves in the big leagues. However, coming into the pro scene has its own set of challenges that the rookies might not be aware. One of the greatest players of all time weighed in on the play.

Calvin Johnson joined the NFL Network to discuss a few things with the crew. Before the interview ended, the NFL legend was asked what his advice is for the incoming rookies in the league. Johnson talked about tenacity and that the rookies need to learn what to do when the going gets tough for them. That willingness to get back up, he says, will define their career.

“I mean, adversity is going to be there,” Johnson said. “It’s going to slap you in the face probably [from] day one… The key is like, you know, when you get knocked down by adverse situations, is,  “How do you respond?” You know, you’re going to get knocked down, you’re gonna get punched in the mouth, but can you get back up? And you know, it might not be perfect every time. On top of that, do you have a goal? Do you have a plan of action on where you have on where you want to be? And how do you see yourself?”

Johnson is one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history, with a good argument that he’s the greatest of all time. He spent his entire career with the Detroit Lions, where he built his legacy as one of the most dominant wideouts in league history. He finished his career with 731 catches, 11,619 receiving yards, and 83 touchdowns in nine seasons of play. Johnson’s rookie season was nothing to scoff at, too, finishing with over 700 receiving yards and a spot in the All-Rookie team in 2007.

The 2026 NFL draft’s wide receiver class features a few talented players looking to make a name for themselves. Players such as Carnell Tate, Jordyn Tyson, Makai Lemon, and KC Concepcion are some of the new pass-catchers coming into the league.
