NFL Draft rumors: Fernando Mendoza, Ty Simpson could be only QBs picked in first 3 rounds

Fernando Mendoza is the odds-on favorite to go first overall to the Las Vegas Raiders in the NFL Draft, with Ty Simpson also making a case to go in the first round, although that isn’t a guarantee. The quarterback class at this year’s NFL Draft isn’t quite as deep as other years, and that could create a domino effect where we see an absence of quarterbacks on the first night, according to Albert Breer via Sports Illustrated.

“Ty Simpson is going to be one of the stories of draft night. I’m working through my annual story with coaches assessing the quarterbacks now, and I can say this: For some teams, there’s a pretty big dropoff from Simpson to the next guy, be it LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier, Penn State’s Drew Allar, or Miami’s Carson Beck,” Breer reported. “As such, I think there’s a chance Simpson and presumed first pick Fernando Mendoza will be the only ones picked before Saturday. And I do think there’s a bit of an effect to that, in how people view Simpson.”

The absence of quarterbacks could have two different effects on the first night of the draft. If a team in need of one thinks that Simpson isn’t a runaway sure-thing, they could wait until later in the draft to get one of the other options. However, if there are a couple of teams that think that they need Simpson, they could take him earlier than expected or find a way to get higher in the draft to land him.

The Raiders are the team most in need of a quarterback, but other teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals will be looking to add young depth to their rosters to compete for a job or be the successor to the veterans already in place.
