Newmarket Craven Meeting Day 2 (Wednesday 15th April 2026)
Newmarket’s Craven Meeting 2026 continues on Wednesday and the quality really begins to step up with a couple of key Group races taking centre stage on the Rowley Mile.
As we edge closer to the Classics, this is a day that often provides some of the strongest form lines and clues for the weeks ahead.
The Earl Of Sefton Stakes and the Nell Gwyn Stakes headline the card, with the latter in particular a recognised trial for the 1000 Guineas.
It’s a fascinating mix of proven performers and unexposed types, and as with most of the meeting, market moves and fitness levels can be crucial with plenty of runners making their seasonal return.
There should be some excellent betting opportunities throughout the card, so here are my Newmarket Craven Meeting Day 2 tips and best bets.

- 2.25 Wareeth – 3/1 with Betfred NEXT BEST

Newmarket 1.50 Weatherbys Global Stallions App Handicap (Class 2) 6f
William Haggas took this 12 months ago with More Thunder and the yard have a great chance again with REALIGN.
This horse looked impressive winning at Haydock and then found the testing ground against him as Doncaster but certainly wasn’t disgraced. He is proven fresh and this better ground will suit so there is a lot to like even more so at the price.
Double Rush will probably go off favourite and he is better than he showed on final start in a tough race. His second at Hamilton before that was a big run as was that third behind Hucklesbrook at York so he should be bang there. Diligently is open to further improvement this season and is another one I’m expecting to show up well.
Bet on REALIGN Each Way at 5/1 with Coral
Newmarket 2.25 Betway Fielden Stakes (Listed) (Class 1) 1m1f
The way WAREETH won on debut was mightily impressive. He came some 14 lengths clear at the line and while he probably didn’t beat much he quite clearly is an exciting proposition.
This is obviously a big step up thrown into Listed company now but this colt by Sea The Stars should improve and may well be up to the task. He holds an entry in the Dante so expectations much be pretty high.
Poseidon’s Warrior impressed winning readily at Goodwood when last seen which is never easy for a 2yo. He could be a nice horse going forward too so looks the danger. Aidan O’Brien sends over Isaac Newton who needs to improve but certainly has the size and scope to do so now.
Bet on WAREETH To Win at 3/1 with Betfred
Newmarket 3.00 Betway Earl Of Sefton Stakes (Group 1) (Class 1) 1m1f
- 8 of the last 11 winners were aged either 4 or 5
- 5 of the last 11 winners were favourites or joint favourites and 8/11 top 3 in the betting
- 1 of the last 11 winners won on their last run before
- 11 of the last 11 winners had a rating of 106 or higher
I’m looking forward to seeing DAMYSUS back out. He was last seen winning well over C&D and after just six career starts you’d be foolish to rule out further improvement.
He seems to have plenty of class about him and he should win this en route to better things this season. James Doyle rides again and he ticks plenty of boxes.
Persica won this last year and shouldn’t be underestimated but perhaps Boiling Point will be the one to give the favourite most to think about.
He looked good winning over C&D last season and despite not being at his best on the AW at the start of the year still has potential to run a big race here back on turf now.
Bet on DAMYSUS To Win at 7/4 with Ladbrokes
Newmarket 3.35 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes (Fillies’ Group 3) (Class 1) 7f
- 4 of the last 11 winners were favourites and 7/11 winners top 3 in the betting
- 8 of the last 11 winners were in either the first 4 stalls or the last 4 stalls
- 5 of the last 11 winners won on their last run before
- 5 of the last 11 winners had a rating of 107 or higher
A fiercely competitive renewal of the Nell Gwyn and there are several in with a chance.
BEAUTIFY blotted her copybook somewhat when down the field in the Cheveley Park Stakes but if you put a line through that her profile is hugely convincing.
She was beaten less than a length by exciting stablemate Precise at the Curragh and with more to come as a 3yo she could bounce back and run a big one here. She is impeccably bred and looks decent value in the market.
Act Of Kindness will probably go off favourite for the boys in blue and she did impress winning here when last seen back in October last year. She is evidently held in quite high regard and should show up well.
Frankel filly Mubasimah can improve further too like many of these and is another one I am fearful of in here.
Bet on BEAUTIFY Each Way at 11/2 with Tote
Newmarket 4.10 Scorthy Champ Standing At Barton British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Class 2) 5f
Hugo Palmer has unleashed some smart juveniles already and he could have another one here in the shape of JAZZ QUEEN. This filly by Too Darn Hot cost €210,000 and is related to some very smart types including Winter Power.
The yard won this two years ago with It Ain’t Two and she should take a lot of beating first time out.
Havana Lightning is well related and she is definitely one to keep an eye on in the market for George Boughey. Bint Archange was a fairly cheap purchase for Richard Hughes but the booking of Ryan Moore shows they mean business and she might be able to surprise a few.
Bet on JAZZ QUEEN To Win at 9/4 with bet365
Newmarket 4.45 Molson Coors British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Class 2) 1m
So Regal ran a promising debut at Chelmsford and should improve considerably but I’ve decided to take a chance on debutant STAR OF HOPE for Godolphin.
This Dark Angel filly cost nearly 3 million guineas and is a full sister to Charyn so obviously plenty is expected first time out. The yard have won 2 of the past 3 renewals with Silver Lady and Victory Queen so usually target a good one at this.
Lyrics Of Life has experience on side and if bringing her best could get competitive but I’d be disappointed if she managed to win this as some of the others looks potentially exciting. Darzah wasn’t cheap and could have a say on debut for Haggas so watch the market on that one.
Bet on STAR OF HOPE To Win at 11/4 with bet365
Newmarket 5.17 Betway Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap (Class 3) 1m2f
I was really impressed with the way ORATORICAL won at Nottingham on penultimate start. I know he has been beaten in France since but that was a tough ask and he certainly wasn’t disgraced.
He looks capable of more now handicapping and could easily be the one to beat with William Buick an eye-catching jockey booking.
Archers Bay was off the mark on debut for this yard at Wolverhampton and has a bright future now switched to turf. High Storm beat another nice horse at Doncaster and with race fitness on side is another one I can see getting involved but the favourite probably has greater potential.
Bet on ORATORICAL To Win at 3/1 with bet365
My top tip for Newmarket’s Craven Meeting Day 2 on Wednesday
A mouthwatering afternoon ahead and WAREETH is a horse I can’t wait to see out again following that demolishing job on debut. I have doubled him with DAMYSUS who looks the class angle in the Earl Of Sefton and has winning C&D form so is difficult to oppose.
Bet a Win Double on WAREETH and DAMYSUS at 10/1 with bet365
