Newcastle had the option of a permanent deal as part of the move, but Ramsdale will not remain at St. James’ Park.

They confirmed the decision on Tuesday afternoon in their retained list after the 28-year-old made 23 appearances in all competitions.

Kieran Tripper has also been announced as a summer departure, with the defender ending his four-and-a-half-year stay at Newcastle.

talkSPORT understands Trippier has verbally agreed to join Wolves ahead of next season.

The 35-year-old featured 160 times for Newcastle and played in their Carabao Cup final triumph against Liverpool last season.

Fellow defenders Emil Krafth and Matt Targett are also departing, as well as goalkeeper duo John Ruddy and Max Thompson.

Meanwhile, Fabian Schar has signed a new one-year deal at the club.

What next for Ramsdale?

Ramsdale will have the summer to consider his options after missing out on the England squad for the World Cup.

He is heading into his third year on the books at Southampton, for whom he has made 32 appearances since joining from Arsenal.

The Saints will play in the Championship next season after being kicked out of the play-off final.

Southampton were charged with breaching EFL (English Football League) rules after an analyst was caught spying on Middlesbrough.

A staff member was spotted at Boro’s training ground days before the first leg of their semi-final.

Southampton won 2-1 on aggregate but were later expelled and replaced by Middlesbrough in the final, which was won by Hull City.

They will also begin the 2026/27 season with a four-point deduction.

It’s not yet clear whether Ramsdale would want want to stay at the club and play in the Championship.

He has made 195 Premier League appearances during his career, and may want to return to the top-flight on a permanent basis.
