New Giants DC promises to bring ‘violent’ mentality to New York

The New York Giants are entering a new era under head coach John Harbaugh. New York already overhauled the roster during NFL free agency, adding multiple playmakers on both sides of the ball. The next step is New York’s new coaching staff establishing a new culture ahead of the 2026 season.

Giants defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson promised to bring a violent mentality to the team’s defense during a recent interview.

“We’re gonna play a New York brand of football,” Wilson said on Tuesday, per Giants writer Paul Schwartz. “That’s violent defense.”

Sports Illustrated’s Patricia Traina also noted that Wilson used words like “unapologetic,” “dynamic,” and “unpredictable” when describing how New York’s new defense will behave.

New York hired Wilson as their new defensive coordinator back in January. He was the defensive coordinator for the Titans during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. But Wilson spent some time with Harbaugh in 2023 as Baltimore’s defensive backs coach.

Wilson will lead a New York defense that is already brimming with talent. The Giants have an elite trio of edge rushers in Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Unfortunately, nose tackle Dexter Lawrence wants out of New York after formally requesting a trade on Monday.

The Giants also have a deep secondary after adding Greg Newsome II during free agency.

New York’s defense could get even better if they decide to use the fifth overall pick on a defensive player. Prospects like linebacker Sonny Styles and cornerback Mansoor Delane must be tempting for New York’s front office.

Either way, it will be exciting to see how New York’s defense performs under Wilson’s leadership in 2026.
