NBA rumors: Shams dumps cold water on Lakers’ Giannis Antetokounmpo trade efforts

The Los Angeles Lakers have a lot of decisions to make this offseason, but the end goal is to be better than they were this past season. There is a route they can go to do that, and the one name that comes up is Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Milwaukee Bucks have let it be known that they’re listening to trade offers, and there will be several teams looking to acquire the two-time MVP.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Lakers tried to get into the sweepstakes, but the reality of the matter is that they may not have an offer enticing enough for the Bucks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania on the Rich Eisen Show.

“The Lakers expressed interest in Giannis Antetokounmpo at the deadline. Right now, what they’ll be able to offer is three first-round picks in cap space and essentially absorb Giannis’s contract. Now, if you’re the Bucks, are you just going to trade Giannis to the Lakers for cap space for three first-round picks? Like, my sense is they’re going to get better in the marketplace than that. I think there’s a bigger appetite than that. And so, time will tell. We’ll know in the next six weeks,” Charania said.

The Bucks reportedly want a young star or assets, and though the Lakers have the latter, it’s going to take more than that to land Antetokounmpo. As far as players, the Lakers don’t have anybody of an upper tier to send to the Bucks, unless they plan on doing a sign-and-trade with Austin Reaves, which will probably not happen.

The best bet the Lakers have is bringing back Reaves and LeBron James, and then trying to sign some players that could fit along the margins.

Antetokounmpo is a big ask, and there is a very good chance that other teams will have better offers than the Lakers.
