NBA rumors: Lakers, Heat held Tyler Herro trade talks before Giannis Antetokounmpo blockbuster

As there are rumors surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason, the team is looking to bolster its roster heading into next season, as a new report suggests that they were targeting a star on the Miami Heat, though he’s now on a different team. While the Lakers and the Heat have been linked on a player like Andrew Wiggins, this NBA insider reveals that Los Angeles was looking into the status of Tyler Herro.

Miami sent shockwaves into the NBA world with the blockbuster trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis for Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, and significant draft capital. Before that deal was made and the Lakers gave Austin Reaves a $185 million max contract, Los Angeles “had trade discussions” around Herro and Ware for multiple-first round picks.

“Before Herro joined Milwaukee in the Antetokounmpo trade and the Los Angeles Lakers agreed to a four-year, $185 million max deal with Austin Reaves, the Lakers had trade discussions surrounding Herro and Kel’el Ware, which would’ve involved multiple first-round draft picks, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote. “In addition, the Brooklyn Nets also did due diligence and gauged the price tag for Herro, HoopsHype has learned.”

Now on the Bucks, Tyler Herro is still expected to receive trade interest

It would have been interesting to see if an Antetokounmpo deal wasn’t made, if the Heat and the Lakers were willing to continue talks, though it had been reported by ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel that Kawhi Leonard was a backup option for Miami. Herro now returns home to Wisconsin for the Bucks, though he is also “expected to continue to draw trade interest.”

“Heading into the upcoming season, Herro is on an expiring $33 million deal and is expected to continue to draw trade interest, with many executives around the league curious if Milwaukee will eventually trend more towards a full rebuild or maintain a competitive team with the players acquired for Antetokounmpo,” Scotto wrote.

It remains to be seen what Herro’s trade status looks like as the Bucks appear to be heading into a rebuilding stage.
