NBA rumors: Do Hawks have realistic chance to steal Austin Reaves from Lakers?

The Atlanta Hawks are looking to build on their success from last season, and they have the chance to do so with help in the NBA Draft and free agency. One of their priorities seems to be adding depth to the position, and they have an interest in bringing back CJ McCollum.

There have also been rumors that they could get in the Austin Reaves sweepstakes, but it looks like those talks are being overblown, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

“Atlanta hopes to retain CJ McCollum, league sources told HoopsHype. Meanwhile, the Hawks are figuring out what to do with their $24.3 million team option decision on Jonathan Kuminga and whether to retain him or gauge the trade market on him. More on that later in this story. For now, the chances of the Hawks being considered a real player in the sweepstakes for Reaves are considered low,” Scotto wrote.

The Los Angeles Lakers are making it a priority to re-sign Reaves, but the Brooklyn Nets are ready to offer the guard a max contract.

“Multiple front-office sources around the league, granted anonymity to freely discuss an opposing player, expect Reaves to have interest from the Brooklyn Nets, with a four-year, $178.5 million contract expected to be offered,” Dan Woike of The Athletic wrote.

As for the Hawks, re-signing McCollum is key, and they also have interest in some of the guards that are to land in the lottery. They’ll have their hands on either Keaton Wagler, Kingston Flemings, Mikel Brown Jr. or Darius Acuff Jr. when they select at No. 8.

In the end, the Hawks want a ball handler to pair alongside Jalen Johnson for the future, and getting a guard in the draft would accomplish that goal. They probably don’t want to pay top dollar for an option, which is why the Reaves interest is low.
