With the ongoing question if BYU’s AJ Dybantsa will be the No. 1 overall pick in next Tuesday’s 2026 NBA Draft, this NBA insider gives insight into what will likely happen when the first round starts. As the debate has been between Dybantsa and Kansas’ Darryn Peterson for the No. 1 overall pick, the former is still likely to be the choice for several reasons.

Looking at the case for Dybantsa in ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel’s mock draft, he has the star going No. 1 to the Washington Wizards. Siegel notes how a “majority” think Dybantsa is the better player, fitting with Washington, though Peterson has a “long-term upside” that others are enticed by.

“The Wizards have taken a very long look at Peterson multiple times throughout this pre-draft process, proving that their decision was not definitive heading into the final workouts for these prospects last week,” Siegel wrote.

“On the other side of the equation, you have Dybantsa and his camp, who are sitting back with their feet up with no worries whatsoever,” Siegel continued. “Dybantsa has made it clear that he feels he has done more than enough to be the No. 1 pick, and he has been on the record several times stating how well he would fit in with the Wizards. Not to mention, he’s made it clear he intends to take the Wizards to the playoffs.”

Siegel would go on to say that Dybantsa is the “obvious choice” for the Wizards, explaining how a workout with the team went “perfect” and that the team has been looking for a player with his exact prototype.

“As reported on Monday at ClutchPoints, the young forward left our nation’s capital following his workout and meetings fully of the belief that he would be the first pick in the draft, with one source close to the situation saying everything went ‘perfect.'”

At any rate, it remains to be seen who Washington ends up picking with the No. 1 pick, but don’t be surprised to hear Dybantsa’s name called when Tuesday rolls around.
